About Tuomo Kärnä
As a chief research scientist at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, he was specialised in the fields of dynamic environmental actions and mitigation of structural vibrations. He has designed more than 30 dampers that are succesfully working in high-rise masts and chimneys.
As a co-ordinator of domestic and international research projects, Tuomo Kärnä became a member of a large network of experts working on problems related to slender structures. Since April 2003 he was a Visiting Professor at the Dalian University of Technology in China. He founded his research and consulting firm in 2006. He was also a visiting scientist in NTNU, Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
The main resource of the firm has been the expertice of its principle, Tuomo Kärnä. He achieved his doctoral
degree in 1984 with the best possible scores in structural mechanics, mathematics as well as in the final examination work on aeroelastic vibrations.
About the Company
Karna Research and Consulting has been a part of an international network of experts who investigate
structures that are exposed to harsh environmental forces. The firm has had extensive core competence in
- structural mechanics and vibrations,
- ice engineering, wind-and earthquake engineering,
- mitigation of structural vibrations,
- theoretical and experimental research,
- working in international groups and leading such groups.
Networking for Progress
Karna R&C worked with a group of other experts towards a better understanding of ice forces acting on offshore structures. The firm also designed damping facilities to mitigate vibrations of slender structures.
